The Frog Prince

The Frog Prince

Once upon a time, in a kingdom shimmering with dewdrop diamonds and painted with the softest sunset colors, lived a little princess named Lily. Princess Lily had hair the color of spun honey and eyes like the clearest sky. Her favorite place in the whole castle was the royal garden, a riot of ruby roses, sapphirebells, and emerald ivy. One sunny afternoon, as Lily was chasing butterflies with wings like stained glass, her most prized possession, a shimmering golden ball, slipped from her grasp and tumbled into the deep, cool waters of the royal pond. "Oh, no!" cried Lily, her voice a little wobbly. The pond was dark and mysterious, and Lily was too scared to reach in. Just as a tear began to roll down her cheek, a voice, surprisingly deep and a little croaky, said, "Why are you crying, little princess?" Lily jumped, startled. Peering from beneath a lily pad, as green as a dragon's scale, was a frog. He was plump and shiny, with big, round, golden eyes that seemed to twinkle with kindness. "My golden ball," Lily explained, pointing a small, trembling finger at the water. "It fell in, and I can't get it." The frog blinked his golden eyes. "I can fetch it for you," he croaked. "But I need something in return." Lily's eyes widened. "Anything!" she promised, eager to get her ball back. "If you let me be your friend," the frog said, his voice surprisingly gentle, "and if you promise to share your food with me, and let me sleep on a soft pillow next to your own bed, I will bring you your ball." Lily, who was only thinking about her lost treasure, nodded quickly. "Yes, yes, anything!" With a mighty leap, the frog dived into the pond. The water rippled and swirled, and then, with a triumphant splash, he reappeared, pushing the golden ball towards the edge of the pond. Lily squealed with delight and snatched her ball, her fear of the dark water forgotten. She was so happy, she almost forgot her promise. But as she turned to run back to the castle, the frog called out, "Wait, Princess Lily! You promised!" Lily paused. She looked at the little frog, his golden eyes looking up at her expectantly. She remembered her hasty words. She really didn't want a frog in her room. But then she thought about her promise. Reluctantly, she said, "Alright. Come to the castle tomorrow." The next day, a knock sounded at the palace doors. It was the frog! Lily's heart sank. She tried to hide, but her mother, the Queen, noticed her daughter's worried face. "What is it, my dear?" the Queen asked. Lily, blushing, confessed her promise to the frog. The Queen, a wise and kind woman, smiled. "A promise is a promise, Lily," she said gently. "Even if it's to a little frog." So, the frog was brought into the castle. Lily, though still a little hesitant, shared her delicious royal meals with him. He ate tiny crumbs of cake and sipped from a miniature golden goblet. And that night, the frog slept on a silken cushion next to Lily's bed. He didn't hop or croak, but just rested peacefully. Lily, to her surprise, found that the frog wasn't so bad. He was quiet and polite, and his golden eyes were always kind. She started to talk to him, telling him about her day and her dreams. And the frog listened patiently, his golden eyes never leaving her face. One evening, as Lily was getting ready for bed, she felt a strange sadness. She looked at the frog, who was nestled on his cushion, and a thought popped into her head. She leaned down and, with a gentle kiss, planted a soft kiss on the frog's bumpy head. Suddenly, a golden light filled the room! The frog began to shimmer and glow, and before Lily's astonished eyes, he grew taller and taller, transforming into a handsome young prince, dressed in a tunic the color of moonlight. "Oh!" gasped Lily. The prince smiled, his eyes as kind as the frog's had been. "Thank you, Princess Lily," he said. "You kept your promise, and you showed me true friendship. I was under a spell, and only a kind heart and a promise kept could break it." Princess Lily and Prince Ferdinand, as he was called, became the best of friends. They spent their days exploring the royal gardens, sharing stories, and laughing. And Lily learned a very important lesson: that true beauty is found not on the outside, but in the kindness and promises we keep in our hearts. And sometimes, the most wonderful friends can be found in the most unexpected places, even at the bottom of a pond.
