The Princess And The Pea
In a faraway land stood a magnificent golden castle where a handsome Prince lived. Though he had riches, fine clothes, and endless feasts, his heart was heavy—he longed for a true Princess to share his life.
The Prince searched high and low, meeting many fine maidens who claimed to be Princesses. But something was always missing.
“It’s impossible to tell who is real and who is not!” he sighed.
“Patience, my son,” the King told him wisely. “You will know when you know.”
That very night, a storm raged across the skies. Thunder roared, lightning flashed, and rain hammered down like galloping horses. Suddenly—knock, knock!—someone pounded on the castle door.
The King opened it to find a young lady, dripping wet, her golden hair plastered to her face.
“I am a true Princess,” she said. “Please, may I have shelter for the night?”
The Queen-mother raised an eyebrow. A true Princess? We’ll see about that, she thought.
Up in the guest chamber, the Queen set her clever little test. First, she placed a tiny green pea on the bedstead. Then she stacked twenty mattresses and twenty feather quilts on top. The bed reached the ceiling, and the Princess needed a ladder to climb into it!
The next morning, over breakfast, the Queen-mother asked politely,
“My dear, how did you sleep?”
The Princess gave a tired yawn. “I’m ever so grateful for your kindness, but… there was something hard beneath my bed. I couldn’t sleep a wink!”
The Queen-mother beamed. “Only a true Princess could feel a single pea beneath all those mattresses. She is the one!”
The Prince’s heart leapt with joy. “Dear Princess, will you marry me?”
The Princess blushed, then whispered with a cheeky grin, “On one condition—no more peas in the beds. From now on, peas are for dinner, not for sleeping!”
The Prince laughed and agreed. The kingdom celebrated with music and confetti, and the Prince and his true Princess lived happily ever after.
